August 1958: the Descenso a Nado de la Ría de Navia was born. From then on, this open water swimming competition has been held annually. The Descenso is nowadays an international model for open water swimming competitions.
The people of Navia soon joined this festivity with bagppipers’ parades, charanga bands, a romería asturiana (a celebration in honour of our swimmers)… In 1989, the Descenso was declared a festival of national tourist interest in Spain.
From the very beginning the focal point of the Descenso is the swimmer; every effort is focused on the swimmer. Deep friendship is the spirit of the Descenso, it brings swimmers and people of Navia together, captivated by the estuary’s landscape; an estuary to compete in and to look after.
The Descenso’s motto says it all: Siempre el Agua, Siempre los Amigos (Always water, always friends).
